Our client is a New York–headquartered national governing body for a grassroots action-sports racing discipline, overseeing hundreds of sanctioned tracks and member events across North America. Their Director of Digital Operations, Adam Feldman, first brought us in more than three years ago to replace a legacy membership system that couldn't keep pace with a fast-growing rider base — it was slow, desktop-only, and every race weekend meant a backlog of manually entered results.

We've been their development partner ever since, through four major platform releases and counting.

What we built

  • Member registration & renewals — online sign-up, membership tiers, and automated annual renewals with payment processing built in.
  • Nationwide event & track calendar — searchable by location, date, and track, covering hundreds of sanctioned venues.
  • Live points & rankings leaderboard — results submitted from a race weekend recalculate national and regional rankings in near real time.
  • Mobile-responsive rider dashboard — riders and parents can check upcoming races, standings, and membership status from a phone at the track.
  • Admin tools for regional directors — role-based back-office tools for the volunteers and staff who run local events.

Why React + Node.js

The rider-facing dashboard needed to feel instant — rankings updating the moment results are posted, without a full page reload, on a phone screen at a dusty track with patchy signal. React's component model made that kind of live, interactive UI straightforward to build and keep fast.

On the backend, Node.js gave us a lightweight, high-throughput API layer suited to the platform's real traffic pattern: mostly quiet, then a sharp spike every weekend when hundreds of tracks submit results within the same few-hour window. The same event-driven approach that makes Node good at handling many concurrent connections is exactly what a national race-day traffic spike needs.

Three years, four major releases

This has never been a one-off project. What started as a core rebuild of the membership and event system has grown, release by release, alongside the organization:

  1. Year 1: Core rebuild — membership, renewals, and the event calendar, replacing the legacy desktop-only system.
  2. Year 2: Live points & rankings engine, plus a mobile-first rider dashboard.
  3. Year 3: Regional director admin tools and automated renewal reminders, cutting manual admin work significantly.
  4. Ongoing: Performance tuning ahead of each new racing season and steady feature requests from regional staff.
A membership platform for a growing sports organization is never really "done" — it needs a technical partner who sticks around season after season, not one who disappears after launch.

Why this matters for membership organizations

Federations, leagues, and membership-driven nonprofits often carry the same pain: a system built years ago that can't scale with their community anymore, and no in-house engineering team to fix it. A long-term development partner who understands the platform's history — rather than a rotating cast of contractors relearning it every year — is what actually keeps these systems reliable through every race season. That's the relationship we aim to build with every client, at direct, no-middlemen rates.
