Our client is a nonprofit based on Hawai‘i Island that teaches vipassanā — insight meditation rooted in the Theravada Buddhist tradition — through retreats, weekly sittings, and online programs reaching students across Hawai‘i, the US continent, Canada, and Southeast Asia. Alongside its teaching programs, the organization also runs community outreach into the local prison system and supports a school overseas through an international giving project.
They brought us on to build a dedicated mobile app and a companion website — giving students a simple way to follow guided sittings, browse the program calendar, and stay connected to the practice wherever they are, not just during a scheduled online sitting.
What we built
- React Native mobile app — a single codebase shipping to both iOS and Android, giving students guided meditations and program access from their phone.
- Companion web app — a browser-based counterpart to the mobile app, so students without the app installed can still access the same programs and teachings.
- Program calendar & scheduling — a clear, up-to-date view of local sittings, online programs, and retreats, reflecting a schedule that changes throughout the year.
- Content & teaching library — structured access to readings, chanting resources, and guided practices referenced across the organization's teaching materials.
- Lightweight, accessible design — built to work well for a broad range of students, including those joining from limited bandwidth or older devices.
Why React Native
A small nonprofit team doesn't have the budget or bandwidth to maintain two separate native codebases. React Native let us ship one mobile app that runs on both iOS and Android, while sharing a large part of the underlying logic with the web app — which meant faster delivery and a much lower ongoing maintenance cost, letting the organization's limited resources go toward its actual teaching programs rather than software upkeep.
Building for a place-rooted practice
This organization's teaching is explicitly rooted in Hawai‘i's place and culture, not just hosted there incidentally. That meant the app and site needed a calm, unhurried feel in keeping with the practice itself, clear pathways for complete beginners as well as seasoned practitioners, and a design that didn't feel like a generic events or course platform repurposed for meditation.
Come, see for yourself — that's the invitation at the heart of this kind of teaching. The app just needed to get out of the way and make that as easy as possible for students, wherever they were practicing from.
Why this matters for nonprofits and small teams
Mission-driven organizations often assume a real mobile app is out of reach — something only well-funded companies can afford to build and maintain. A cross-platform approach like React Native, paired with a lean, focused feature set built around what students actually need, brings that well within reach of a small nonprofit team, without locking them into years of expensive native maintenance.
